Responsibilities include teaching beginning, intermediate and graduate students and B.F.A. seminars.

Other duties include general studio, kiln repair, maintenance, supervision of  (AI) Associate Instructors, teaching beginning ceramics and (GA) General Assistant who worked with me.

Professional Experience:

1995 to present   Full time studio artist, working in self- built studio , Currently I have three kilns: a 37 foot Anagama,built in 1995,a small tube kiln 85 cubic feet with back wall, built in 1998,and a new design kiln with two fire boxes,9 feet wide,by 84 inches tall, by 8 feet deep, built in 2002

2007   La Borne s'enflamme (La borne in Flames) France,  July 13-29. There were over 25 kilns being fired by the owners and their invitees. This was a great experience and I was glad to be invited to participate by Nicolas Rousseau.

2007   National Kiln Building Workshop -- (Building and firing the perfect Anagama).  Lexington, North Carolina, June 9-23.  Workshop included teaching how to build an Anagama with approx. 2500 bricks, also include slide lectures of kilns I have built in the past, including kilns in Korea (see below).

2006   Presenter at 20+1 Years of the Tozan Kilns, An International Wood Fire Conference, Oct. 11 - 14,   Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ, presented a lecture on kiln design.

2006   Mashiko International Ceramic festival, a three week workshop which inculded working demonstrations ,slide show , firing a Naborigama (5 chamber kiln) and Exhibitions  in The Hamada House in Mashiko, Japan

2005  Kiln building, Ronald P. Knights kiln In Marshal, North Carolina, It was in August two weeks kiln was Anagama style with some modifications

2005  National Workshop Kiln Building, Mokane, Missouri, two week workshop (splitting wood building kiln, Anagama, loading and firing, plus building a roof)

2002  August 21 - September 20, Kwangju, South Korea, attended artists’ group workshop:

12 ceramic artists participated from Japan, Korea and USA. Workshop consisted of social interactions, visitations and making artwork, built a five chamber traditional Korean wood fire kiln with clay cones

2002  September 6,  workshop Mokpo Festival, Mokpo South Korea, workshop of throwing demonstrations and hand building techniques

2002  June 1 - June 16 , workshop Clay It's In The Hands Studio, Swisher, Iowa, national kiln building workshop and firing . Built a new style wood kiln, wood fired kiln with two fire Boxes

2001  August 6-19, Fulton, Missouri, national workshop kiln, Anagama kiln building (including roof to cover kiln) and firing,

2000  July 1 - 11, attended the International Macsabal Wood Fire Conference as both an attendee and a presenter.  As an attendee, I saw workshops by many international and Korean ceramic artists.  As a presenter, I performed two workshops demonstrating the way I work with the clay.  I was also asked to give a special lecture on the final day of the conference tying in the importance of international interaction with Korea in regards to wood fire ceramics.  I especially addressed issues of kiln construction and social interaction with wood firing.

2000  June 6 - 25, Kyung Hee University, Yongin, South Korea, helped build and design 7,000 brick Jang Jack Gama 42 foot long with two fire boxes. First firing July 2 - 5, all chambers reached temperature., at Kyung hee University 
 
2000  May 20 to July 14, Osan, South Korea. worked at Kim Yong Moon's studio, made a body of work for exhibitions, fired his kiln twice.  Did weekly workshops for students and parents. 

1998  Clay It's In The Hands Studio,Swisher,Iowa, built a two-chamber wood kiln consisting of a tube kiln dumping into a catenary.  Advantage of design is greater flexibility in firing

1994-1996  Foundry worker; experience included core making, molding, iron pouring and shipping and receiving.  Ending position foreman over grinding room employees
 
1992-1993  Taught three semesters of Ceramics at Indiana University; please refer to teaching experience

1992  Summer The University of Iowa,Iowa,city,Iowa,assisted in design and construction of 32 foot Anagama wood fired kiln with passive damper

1991  October workshop, Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, consisted of  hand building techniques. For one month students could watch me work different times  
  
1989-90  Teaching Assistant, The University of  Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, maintain six electric kilns, firing four 75 cubic foot sprung arch kilns, one 175 cubic foot car kiln, one 25 foot Anagama wood fired kiln.  Other responsibilities included coordinating approximately 260 students through the bisquing and finish firing techniques, demonstrated loading and firing procedures, this also included graduate students
   
1988   The University of  Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, conducted a wood fire workshop for five students from the Ceramics Department of  the  Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois.  The workshop consisted of students bringing their own work to kiln site to fire and demonstrations of loading procedures, types of wood used and firing an Anagama kiln. Presented by Dan Murphy and Gary Hootman,

1987-90  The University of  Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, maintained and fired 25 foot Anagama kiln, approximately 20 plus firings, experimenting with different firing lengths and clay bodies to obtain desired surface effects and colors on my work 
 
1984-90  Kiln construction: three catenary arch kilns, one car kiln, one fiber kiln, three wood kilns, one salt kiln and three sprung arch kilns (Cornell College and The University of Iowa both in Iowa)

2003  Purchase Award, Anseong Museum of Art, Anseong, South Korea

2002  Received the Human Special Prize Award in Ceramic Design Human , Mokpo, South Korea

2000   received letter of appreciation for my work and participation in the International Macsabal Wood Fire Festival from the Federation of Korea Art & Culture Association, Yongin branch, Yongin, South Korea, Chairman Soon-KwanMa. They choose two pieces to be put in the permanent museum in Yongin, Korea. Commemorating their tradition in clay in this area, they are building it on an ancient kiln site dating back to 1000 A.D.
